Top 10 Best Movies of 2017

From Get Out to Logan, here are my top 10 movies of 2017

I have no idea if it’s the rising political tension in America or the controversies in Hollywood but 2017 has been a fantastic year for film. This year, we’ve seen a nice mixture of indie movies and big-budget extravaganzas. And not one over-shadowed the other. Previous years, there had been an over-emphasis on mainstream blockbusters such as superhero movies and audiences didn’t have a chance to see the smaller films. Not this year. Films like It Comes At Night, or Lady Bird would have never been released in my neck of the woods, and I’m glad they did.

A common theme in my list includes directorial debuts. From Jordan Peele to Greta Gerwig to Taylor Sheridan, these first-time directors are ones to watch for in the future. And as we continue our fight for diversity, movies have been quite diverse this year. The sleeper hit, Get Out, proved that film about race can be mega hits while female directors are starting to push through. With the push from the current American president and movements such as the #MeToo movement, 2017 has created some of the best movies of the century. Here are just 10 of my favorites.

With Denis Villeneuve at the helm, Blade Runner 2049 is worthy sequel to one of sci-fi’s most influential film

As a cinephile, I tend to prefer original, different, and daring films. However, I’m completely stuck in a time where creative content is scarce. It’s a time where Hollywood likes to play it safe and what’s safer than sequels, remakes, and franchises. But who can blame them? These type of films tend to do more at the box office, and the audience seems to keep making that demand. But there comes Blade Runner 2049, a sequel that defies all odds. A continuation of one of sci-fi’s most controversial film but at the same time, it’s a stand-alone film, only inhabiting the Blade Runner universe. 2049 shows us how to make a great sequel and why they are so important.

Don’t miss these 15 buzz-worthy movies that will surely end the year with a bang

Now that you feel the cold air on your skin and the leaves are starting to change, you know that summer is finally over. Looking back, we had some pretty awesome movies from Dunkirk to Baby Driver. For me, end of the year movies are often the best. Not only is it the start of Oscar season but this year, we have some great blockbusters to look forward to. I’ve managed to narrow it down to 15 films you cannot miss in the coming months.
