One fantastic movie year is done, and another one will shortly begin
Looking back at 2016, there are plenty of films that deserve attention. I’m currently writing my Top 10 Best Movies of 2016 and let me be the first to tell you that it is a tough one. Now turning our sight to 2017, it’s looking more and more like a great year for movie fans. This list contains mostly blockbusters but don’t worry I still have my sight on smaller movies, which usually tend to be the ones I love more. Speaking of sight, I will be certainly watching closely at both DCEU movies that will be coming out this year. Wonder Woman and Justice League will try to make the DCEU relevant and a worthy Marvel adversary. While the DCEU had a rough year, horror movies had an excellent year. The Conjuring 2, The Witch and Don’t Breathe were standouts from this year. Some much-anticipated sequels are coming out as well as directors returning to what they do best. Nolan’s Dunkirk, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 and Deadpool 2 are all movies that will need to deliver to the expectations. All and all, 2017 will be a blast and here is my list of the most anticipated movies of next year.
15. Get Out
Starting out with a bold choice, Get Out looks like a horror movie both original and clever. Its commentary on racial tensions still present in America, will either make it or break it. However, the bold choices for a horror movie will appeal to the horror fans who have been delighted with some of the best horrors in recent years. Get Out will continue that trend.
14. Justice League
Why isn’t Justice League higher on this list you ask? Well, let’s just say that it’s no secret that the DCEU has yet to take off. The lack of promos surrounding the movie makes people both anxious and worried. However, Justice League has a chance to revive the DCEU and if it succeeds, what a miracle will that be.
13. Beauty and the Beast
Disney’s Belle is getting the live action treatment. Everything is looking to be going in its favor from Emma Watson to the beautiful visuals to the trailer breaking records. The only thing worrisome about Beauty and the Beast is Bill Condon. Who is he? Well, you most likely remember him as the director of Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1 and 2. Let that sink in for a minute. Still, Disney has yet to make a bad movie, so I’ll give it a chance.
Remakes. Horror remakes. Did you just shiver in your seat? It’s okay, you have plenty of reasons to. Stephen King’s creepy clown, Pennywise, is going to the big screen. Now, before getting upset, let me just say that the It TV movie can be improved upon. In that sense, the It remake can actually be really really good.
11. Fast 8
The Fast and the Furious franchise was gotten better with each movie. James Wan has created undoubtedly the best film of the franchise. With Fast 8, F. Gary Gray, director of Straight Outta Compton, will sit in the director’s chair. With Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren joining the crew, Fast 8 is another movie to get excited for.
After Interstellar, Christopher Nolan has yet to make another movie. Dunkirk is the return for him, and it looks absolutely magnificent. Interstellar was controversial, some liked it, others didn’t. I’m sure Nolan is thirsty to prove the people who hated Interstellar that he still go it.
9. Kong: Skull Island
Godzilla meets King Kong. Probably the most anticipated fight movie of 2017, Kong: Skull Island looks incredible. This movie has the best cast featuring Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson and John Goodman. If that isn’t enough to get you excited for this movie, I don’t know what will.
8. Alien: Covenant
The Alien franchise is one of those franchises looking to get rebooted. Alien: Covenant may be their ticket. Ridley Scott is directing the movie, and if he is on top of his game, this might be one of the best movies of 2017. If he can go back to the basics, this will certainly please fans of the franchise, myself included.
Hugh Jackman’s last movie as Wolverine is sure to be a sad experience. The trailer got lots of attention when it first hit and for good reason it was. The trailer was so intense, and it finally looks like we may be getting a true Wolverine movie.
6. John Wick: Chapter 2
John Wick was one of the surprises of 2014. It was an action movie that had good action and stunning visuals. Chapter 2 looks just as good as the first one. The only thing holding it back is the box office which was poor for the first one. I hope people will go see Chapter 2, so we can hopefully get a Chapter 3.
5. Wonder Woman
Justice League may be the most anticipated DCEU movie, but I believe that Wonder Woman looks better and has a better chance of being..well, good. Gal Gadot is good as Wonder Woman, and her story looks interesting. By the trailer, the movie looks like it has a storyline something the DCEU has struggled with.
4. Deadpool 2
Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool is one of the best-realized superheroes since Wolverine. The first Deadpool has a superb movie, and they perfectly captured the what Deadpool is. However, recently Tim Miller left the project stating creative differences with Ryan Reynolds. This feud will probably be irrelevant when the movie does come out but still this could cause significant damage to the new franchise.
3. Blade Runner 2049
Denis Villeneuve is the best director working today. He does movies like Arrival, Sicario, and Prisoner which are all great. His next film, Blade Runner 2049, which makes it a must see. People have always wanted a Blade Runner 2, and now, in 2017, we actually get one.
2. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2
The internet exploded when Baby Groot was first revealed in the teaser trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. While he is cute, the movie surrounding it looks exquisite. It looks like they kept the style that worked so good for the first one and upped the visuals.
1. Star Wars Episode VIII
While Rogue One is highly anticipated, people are most excited for episode VIII. The Force Awakens was a success both critically and domestically. Episode VIII will try to follow a huge success. I don’t think it will have a problem. Everyone wants the main story to continue, and Star Wars looks to be in good hands.
